Nick Higgins MA, PhD

Nick is Director of the Creative Media Academy and Chair of Media Practice in the Faculty of Business & Creative Industries at the University of the West of Scotland.

Before joining UWS, he was a Senior Lecturer in Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Edinburgh where he founded the practice-based PhD in Trans-disciplinary Documentary Film and a masters programme in Media, Culture & Practice.

He is an award winning documentary director and producer, whose most recent production, We Are Northern Lights (2013), was the first ever Scottish documentary to be released by the multiplex cinema chain, Cineworld.

He has taught at the universities of Glasgow and the Glasgow School of Art, is the author of several books and articles, and is a graduate of the European MEDIA Eurodoc & Archidoc programmes.

His films have screened on the BBC, STV, Al Jazeera, SVT (Sweden), YLE (Finland), ZDF (Germany), VPRO (the Netherlands) and at film festivals internationally.

He has sat on the Edinburgh International Film Festival & BAFTA juries and is the secretary of the Screen Education Edinburgh charitable trust.

Previous documentary productions include; Hidden Gifts, Women in Black, A Massacre Foretold & The New Ten Commandments.
