Feature Friday - Once Were Farmers
10 July 2015
On Feature Fridays we picked one company from our Directory and got to know their business a bit better by asking them a few quick questions.
1. Who are Once Were Farmers?
Once Were Farmers is an animation studio and production company established by Will Adams and Rory Lowe over 13 years ago. After working together on newspaper picture desks, we discovered a shared love of film, animation and digital imagery. We've since ploughed many fields together, creating world-class animated characters, motion graphics and visual effects for advertising, film and broadcast. Today we are busy sowing the seeds of own productions, TV shows and feature films, and preparing our harvest to sell around the globe.
2. Tell us about some of your most notable work.
Some of Once Were Farmers most notable work includes VFX for the feature film 'God Help The Girl' and epic battle reconstructions for the BBC documentary 'The Quest for Bannockburn', which was a particular favourite for everyone who worked on it! Our first productions for BBC Learning have also been a great success; combining education and comedy for mini-series such as 'Bitesize Shakespeare' and 'Kick Sum Maths' - which we recently sold to ABC in Australia. Other highlights include commercials for Colgate, MTV and Samsung, which gave us room to push boundaries and have fun making them.
3. Where are you based?
Our HQ is in Glasgow City Centre, a beautiful old building near Central Station; and we have a satellite office in Suffolk, in another beautiful spot in the suffolk countryside.
4. Do you have a particular specialism within animation? Or do you cut across different disciplines (Film, TV, Advertising etc).
We specialise in 3D animation and Visual Effects; and in finding the most efficient ways to deliver new ideas. We've nurtured a broad network of very talented folk who enable us to create the standard of photo-real VFX normally associated with multi-million dollar Hollywood budgets. We also create more stylised graphic work. Our core strength is our ability to tailor our work to whichever style we feel most suits the project at hand.
5. How important would you say collaboration is to your business?
Collaboration is vital to our business. We enjoy close creative collaboration with our clients as well as a broad range of talented freelancers around the world; artists, designers, writers and animators, who each bring their own creative talents into the mix and contribute to projects that are greater than the sum of their parts. As we venture onto bigger projects we are now also discussing international co-productions with other studios across Europe.
