Feature Friday - Tenement TV

14 August 2015

On Feature Fridays we picked one company from our Directory and got to know their business a bit better by asking them a few quick questions.

1. Who are Tenement TV?

Tenement TV are Scotland’s largest online music platform. First launching with acoustic sessions filmed from TTV HQ – a beautiful tenement flat in the West End of Glasgow – the platform has grown to develop a website of news, reviews and beyond as well as creating exciting partnerships with the likes of Tennent’s Lager T Break stage at Scotland’s biggest music festival, T in the Park. Tenement TV have had their finger to the pulse of the breakthrough, underground and international since 2011, continuing to give a passionate and premier platform to bands and fans in Scotland and beyond through unique live sessions and a packed music website.

2. Tell us about some of your most notable work

TTV began to attract a lot of attention as word of our live sessions spread and filming big breakthrough acts such as Jake Bugg, Bastille, Hozier and Kodaline really blew up our Youtube channel which now exceeds 3 million views. We have recorded live sessions on site at Wickerman Festival, filmed the T Break stage performances at T in the Park for three years and interviewed some of the world’s most renowned music icons such as Nile Rodgers. In 2014 we reached another milestone as the team headed off to the international music festival SXSW in Austin, Texas. It was a great achievement for our Scottish team as we filmed sessions, interviewed bands and revelled in the renowned music event. We also jetted off to NYC and filmed some great sessions in quirky venues around the city. This trip was another step towards internationalising the Tenement TV brand and another exciting chapter for the team.

We continue to work with a creative team of writers, videographers, photographers and music enthusiasts to grow Tenement TV and continue to capture the passion of our crew and turn it into exciting projects for music fans to enjoy around the world.

3. Any funny stories involving the artists you’ve had in the studio?

A funny story that comes to mind was when Bastille were up for a session and things may have started to get loud. We thought we heard some banging from downstairs just before the last song so I went downstairs to check it out and it turned out that the neighbours were hitting a broom off their roof trying to disrupt the session. Luckily the band saw the funny side...

4. Who has been your favourite act on Tenement TV?

There’s so many to chose from, but it’s really cool when we get an international act up at TTV HQ. Twin Peaks are a huge buzz band from Chicago and they stopped by one early Saturday morning earlier on this year. They were so into their tracks and 1000% live and breathe rock ‘n’ roll music. It was really great to watch.

5. What kind of challenges do you face as a modern business working in the music industry?

Our team invest a lot of time in TTV and we reinvest to create more exciting projects and collaborate with as many creative people in Scotland as we possibly can. It’s a challenge to always come up with fresh ideas and keep our ear to the next big thing, but we love it and if that’s the only challenge we face today, I would say we’re pretty lucky!
