Event Round-Up: ‘Creativity and Innovation: Making a Difference’ with John Thackara

October 31, 2014

John Thackara

We were delighted to host John Thackara in partnership with Design in Action at the Òran Mór in Glasgow’s west end on Thursday 23rd October. The event was well attended with over 100 delegates packed in to the stunning Auditorium under the mural ceiling by Alasdair Gray.

Michael Marra, Deputy Director of Design in Action opened the evening and Helena Ward, from Creative Scotland introduced John to the stage where she summarised the highlights of his career, as a writer, philosopher, and event producer, spanning 30 years.

John went on to speak about a myriad of topics encompassing design, creativity, innovation and transformational change followed by a Q&A session.

Here, one of the event attendees, Justin Eade, Creative Director at Glimpse, a digital health company based within The Hub at Pacific Quay, shares his views on the event and the value to businesses of these events for networking opportunities…

I saw the tweet from Creative Clyde encouraging attendance as I’d missed signing up to it. I thought it sounded relevant to my work which is all about creative innovation – I’ve spent more than 25 years developing creative solutions to a very diverse range of problems. And I’m within easy reach of Glasgow’s west end!

I do think there is tremendous value in these events. Our work in the creative, design, innovation, communication industry is all about ideas and critical thinking. By immersing ourselves in other’s thoughts, awareness and conclusions we can further develop our own projects and creativity. Not just by being better informed, but by re-appraising the agenda, looking at a fresh approach and being inspired by what success others are having. And ideally, by connecting and collaborating, we’re most productive.

One of the things I think creatives are very good at is reading between the lines and identifying a new angle through the clarification of someone else’s communication. Sharing ideas, brainstorming, switching subjects of focus can all produce new insights and deepen our own considerations.

I think John Thackara’s presentation allowed for this process to take place. It also informed the audience of the realities of ecological essentials/ facts and the ‘Signals of Transformation’. How it may be possible for humanity to ‘leave things better’ by reconnecting with place… Repurposing and devising more harmonious solutions to the immense challenges we face at the beginning of the 21st century.

I met again briefly with three other professionals and these relationships could have progressed if I’d had the opportunity to stay longer! I think some great new contacts could have been made.
